How to Simulate SIP and RTP over Ethernet

This page describes how to simulate a SIP User Agent with the following features:

  • Connection to an Ethernet network
  • Establishment of signalling and media channels by using SIP
  • No registration from a Proxy

Connecting the unit and setting the test conditions

The Clarinet-Book USB unit connections and the test condition settings for basic SIP communication are detailed in the following pages:

Setting the test conditions for Ethernet profile

A new profile can be created with the Wizard from the Template list by selecting:

  • LAN application.
  • Profile with a description including LAN, Simu, PH=10BT DL=SIP
  • Filter with a description including  DL= MAC802.3/Auto/SIP

Example using the wizard:

  • ProfileèNewèLANèlan_simu_sip_ua.acpèFilter?èLan_auto_rtp.acf

The IP-type simulation profile Sip_simu_mac_ua.aip invoked by Lan_simu_sip_ua.acp is automatically copied in to the same directory.

Both profiles (*.acp and *.aip) resulting from the wizard are ready for SIP simulation over an Ethernet 10 Mbits interface.

Setting the parameters for transmitting wav file in SIP simulation profile

Profile Sip_simu_mac_ua.aip  requires some modifications of the default destination/source:

  • Open the profile:
    • ProfileèOpen IP...èSip_simu_mac_ua.aip
  • Modifications to define RTP resources  used by the SIP Generator and Responder:

    • Transmitting files:   Transmit filesèselect
Select the wav file from the list in the current directory.
The default wav file (or137.wav) should be manually copied from Clarinet\Clatools\Template\L A N (Ethernet - IEEE 802.3)
    • Setting the conditions of use of Data sources RTP profiles èRTP 1 èEdit
Setting "Tx Data source"  if find :
      • Select "Transmit file" mode
      • Open "Tx files" to provide the specifications of the wav file
    • Save each of the RTP profiles
  • Modifications to setup the SIP sources used by the Generator SIP-UA :

    • Changing the content of  Generator èSIPDestination1 èEdit
      Setting the  Active Source:
      • Select RTP simulation in  Active Source
      • Select one profile from the list in RTP profiles
      • Select the way to transmit the file  (continuously or N  times).
    • Changing the conditions for terminating calls  Responder èSIPSource1 èEdit
      Setting the  Active Source:
      • Select RTP simulation in  Active Source
      • Select one profile from the list in RTP profiles
      • Select the way to transmit the file  (continuously or N  times).
  • Save the profile under a new name:
    • ProfileèSave asèfilename.aip.
  • Select this new name in the LAN profile and save it.
    • ProfileèSave asèfilename.acp.

Setting the parameters for transmitting PESQ in SIP simulation profile

Profile Sip_simu_mac_ua.aip  requires some modifications of the default destination/source:

  • Open the profile:
    • ProfileèOpen IP...èSip_simu_mac_ua.aip
  • Modifications to define PESQ resources used by the SIP Generator and Responder:

    • Transmitting files:  Transmit filesèselect
Select the wav file from the list in the current directory.
The default wav file (or137.wav) should be manually copied from Clarinet\Clatools\Template\L A N (Ethernet - IEEE 802.3)
  • Modifications to setup the SIP sources  used by the Generator SIP-UA :

    • Changing the content of   Generator èSIPDestination1 èEdit
      Setting the  Active Source:
      • Select PESQ in  Active Source
      • Select one file from the list in Tx File
      • Select the number of repetitions  ( N  times). In that PESQ mode, the "synchro" pattern is automatically inserted before the wav file.
    • Changing the conditions for terminating calls  Responder èSIPSource1 èEdit
      Setting the  Active Source:
      • Select PESQ in  Active Source
      • Select one file from the list in Tx File
      • Select the the number of repetitions  ( N  times). In that PESQ mode, the "synchro" pattern is automatically inserted before the wav file.
  • The default wav file (or137.wav) should be manually copied from Clarinet\Clatools\Template\L A N (Ethernet - IEEE 802.3)
  • Save the profile under a new name:
    • ProfileèSave asèfilename.aip.
  • Select this new name in the LAN profile and save it.
    • ProfileèSave asèfilename.acp.

Running the profile

The profile is ready to generate one outgoing call and to terminate any incoming call for 30 seconds.

To launch the profile:

  • Select Profile->Run or click horse_on.gif (968 octets) (it allows selection of the profile name). See Running a test
  • The Event-Editor window is automatically opened.

To stop the profile:

  • Click horse_off.gif (975 octets)  See: Stopping a test
  • The Event-Editor window is automatically closed.
