How to Monitor IP over Ethernet

Monitoring IP channels is one of the basic features of the Clarinet.

Connecting the unit

The Clarinet Book USB Ethernet 10/100 uses the RJ45 or AUI port.

The Clarinet Book can be connected to a 10Base2 BNC connector by using:-

  • An external transceiver (provided as an accessory) AUI-10B2.
  • The power supply of the Clarinet Book which provides the power to the transceiver.

Setting the test conditions for Ethernet RJ45

A new profile can be created from a template, using the wizard, by selecting:-

  • LAN application.
  • Profile with a description including LAN, Monitor, PH=10/100 BT
  • Filter with a description including  DL= MAC802.3/Auto.

Example using the wizard:-

  • Profile=>New=>LAN=>lan_mon.acp=>Filter?=>Lan.acf.

The profile created by the wizard is ready for IP monitoring over Ethernet RJ45 10M or 100M (automatic detection). The IP protocol is automatically detected by the filter spec automatic from the MAC layer (Pro=0800).

Acquisition limited to a set of MAC addresses

The profile can be modified to only generate events from a set of MAC addresses:-

  • Edit the profile created by the wizard (e.g. lan_mon.acp).
  • Go to Monitored Address:-
    • Set the value of source and destination in the columns source address and destination address.
  • Save the profile under a new name:-
    • Profile=>Save as=>filename.acp.

Acquisition of MAC messages with a limited length

A new profile can be created from a template, using the wizard, by selecting:-

  • LAN application.
  • Profile with a description including LAN, Monitor, PH=10/100BT Len=64
  • .
  • Filter with a description including DL= MAC802.3/Auto.

Example using the wizard:-

  • Profile=>New=>LAN=>lan_mon_64.acp=>Filter?=>Lan.acf

The profile created by the wizard is ready for IP monitoring over Ethernet RJ45 10M or 100M (Automatic detection) with MAC messages truncated to 64 bytes. The IP protocol is automatically detected by the filter spec Automatic from the MAC layer (Pro=0800).

The profile can be modified to change the length of the MAC address:-

  • Go to Interface Specs=>Analysis mode
    • Set the value from the beginning of the message in numbers of bytes in front of Length.
  • Save the profile under a new name:
    • Profile=>Save as=>filename.acp.

Running the profile

To launch the profile:-

  • Select Profile=>Run or click the horse_on.gif (968 octets) button. You will be able to select the name of profile (see Running a test).
  • The Event Editor window is automatically opened.

To stop the profile:-

  • Click on the horse_off.gif (975 octets) button (see: Stopping a test).
  • The Event Editor window is automatically closed.

Troubleshooting over Ethernet

  • No messages displayed in the Event Editor Windows: Check whehter the LEDs on the Clarinet Book show activity over the LAN interface.
