How to Filter Protocol Events According to a String

Purpose

The String Filter feature can be used to select certain message events for display e.g. by their displayed decoding type or a precise value within a decoded field, whilst suppressing all others from the display.

The string filter is a toggle on/off function.

Turning the string filter feature on

1) On the main menu at the top of the Event Editor window:-

  • Go to Edit=>String Filter to open the definition dialogue, where you can edit the filter string.
    If the current filter string is zero-length, the string filtering feature will be automatically disabled.
  • Use View=>String Filter or the F7 key to enable the String Filter feature, allowing the display of only those events which include the current filter string.

2) Using the mouse:-

  • Highlight the string of characters you wish to use as a filter string from the Event Editor window.
  • Right click to display the context menu, and select String Filter.
    The string filter option will automatically be enabled using the selected text as the current filter string.

Turning off the String Filter feature

Select View=>String Filter from the main menu in the Event Editor or press the F7 key, to disable the String Filter feature.

Application to quickly count a number of messages

Following a string filter action, it is possible to count the number of events occurring within a user-defined range displayed on the screen:-

  • The beginning of the range is defined by a marker.
  • The end of the range is defined by the event currently indicated by the cursor.

With the following steps it is possible to count the total number of events within the defined range which have not been suppressed by the string filter:-

1) Place the cursor on the first message you wish to count, and select Edit=>Event Date from the main menu or press the F5 key, to set a first marker displayed at the beginning of the event.

2) Place the cursor on the last message event, and use Edit=>Event Count or press Ctrl+F5, to display the total number of message events occurring within the defined range.

Application to quickly count the time duration elapsed between two messages

Following a string filter action, it is possible to count the time duration between the first and the last events of a user-defined range displayed on the screen:-

  • The beginning of the range is defined by a marker
  • The end of the range is defined by the event currently indicated by the cursor

Use Edit=>Event Delay or press Shift+F5.
